Amala is a Senior Associate in the Intellectual Property department in our Dubai office, UAE

Amala has extensive experience in commercial agencies and comprehensive IP legal services such as IP strategy & enforcement, IP portfolio management, anti-counterfeiting strategic planning, infringement, complex unfair competition and IP litigation, online enforcement and domain names disputes.

She is experienced in dealing with cases involving various types of IP Rights, including trademarks, industrial designs and models, copyrights, patents, plant varieties, domain names and trade secrets. Amala is also experienced in drafting and negotiating various types of IP and Commercial Agreements in addition that she is experienced in advising technology, financial and media giants on IP aspects of their transactional matters.

Amala regularly assists clients who are specialized in developing online platforms in the preparation and negotiation of their IP and Platform Agreements, including License Agreement, Platform Operation Agreement, Platform’s Terms & Conditions, Confidentiality Agreements, Assignment Agreements in relation to developed IP rights. 

Prior to joining BSA, Amala worked at one of the leading Intellectual Property firms and gained more than ten years of extensive experience in the field of Intellectual Property laws in the Middle East and North Africa with an emphasis on copyrights, trademarks and plant varieties protection. 

She was admitted to Jordan Bar Association in 2009 and holds a bachelor’s degree in law as well as an LL.M in Intellectual Property Laws, both from the University of Jordan.

Highlights of experience
  • Managed the de-registration proceeding of an agency agreement on behalf of one of the most renowned French companies in the field of manufacturing and trading in women fashion and clothing before the Agency Department at the Ministry of Economy in the UAE.
  • Managed a court action on behalf of a large US firm, specialized in providing tax, valuation and financial advisory services, regarding cancellation of the trade names of two UAE auditing & accounting companies as well as claiming compensation for financial and moral damages, on the grounds of infringement of the US’ firms’ well-known trademark.
  • Managed various domain name complaints before the WIPO Arbitration & Mediation Center on behalf of clients (including two of the largest media companies in MENA as well as one of the largest US Tax firms) for the cancellation or transfer of the disputed domain names which were registered and used in bad faith.
  • Successfully handled the defense of varied media claims for damages filed by parties in UAE, Oman and Saudi Arabia against a well-known Media Group in relation to contents aired or published by the Media Group.
  • Assisted a leading EU company - specialized in developing proprietary plant breeds – in negotiating and drafting license and grower agreements related to its plant varieties as well as advising them on IP, and in particularly plant varieties protection, strategies under the applicable UAE laws.
  • Assisted one of the largest universities in the UAE on the protection of its innovations through filing and managing the protection of its patent applications.
  • Assisted a prominent Australian F&B Company in the preparation and negotiation of a Franchise Agreement, as well as advising them on the license of know-how, trade secrets and other IP assets in the frame of a franchise transaction.
